How to Stop Sinning
We all have habits that are hard to let go of . . . sometimes even sins. Have you asked yourself, “How do I stop sinning?” Today’s Faith Friday episode explores the concept of sin, something we all struggle with. We will go over five practical steps to help individuals live a life above sin.
Romans 7:14-25 So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.
I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.
I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
This Scripture stresses the importance of recognizing the internal conflict that sin creates.
Before we know how to stop sinning we must first ask ourselves, What is sin? The definition of sin is anything that displeases God, not just external actions but also internal thoughts and feelings. As emphasized in the scripture above.
5 Steps to Stop Sinning and Letting Sin Dominate Your Life
1. Recognize Your Need for Salvation:
Acknowledging one’s need for salvation is the first step toward dealing with sin. Salvation involves recognizing one’s sinfulness and confessing a need for a savior, Jesus Christ. “I am a sinner in need of a Savior.”
2. Receive the Grace of the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit provides an essential role in providing the grace to live above sin. You can’t live above sin without the power of the Holy Spirit.
3. Remove and Replace Triggers:
Don’t only remove triggers that lead to sin but also replace them with positive, healthy alternatives. It is important to address the underlying issues that trigger sinful behavior.
4. Repair and Repent:
Understand the need to repent and make amends for wrongdoings. Accountability and making things right are vital in breaking the cycle of sin.
5. Reject Shame:
Distinguish between guilt and shame. Shame is counterproductive. Reject self-condemnation and avoid dwelling on past mistakes.
I hope these steps, backed by biblical references, resonate with you if you’ve asked yourself how to stop sinning. These five practical steps can help you live a life above sin. They emphasize the importance of embracing faith, grace, and the willingness to address and overcome sin.
