How to Resist & Overcome Temptation
Temptation comes knocking on all of our doors. We all face it, regardless of where we are on our faith journey. We’re diving deep into a topic that resonates with all of us: how to overcome temptation.
Let’s acknowledge it—the temptation is universal. It doesn’t discriminate based on how spiritual or morally upright you are. Even Jesus faced temptation, showing us that temptation isn’t a sin. Understanding this helps us avoid the spiral of shame that often accompanies temptation.
One of my favorite passages of Scripture on overcoming temptation is this:
1 Corinthians 10:13: The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
Five Steps to Overcome Temptation
- Acknowledge your weaknesses. This is crucial. Just as I have a sweet tooth, you must identify what tempts you explicitly.
- Don’t put yourself in harm’s way—don’t bring it home with you. If sweets are my downfall, I won’t stock my pantry with them. The same goes for any temptation. If it’s alcohol, stay clear of liquor stores; if it’s gossip, maybe steer away from reality TV or workplace drama.
- Find accountability. Surround yourself with trusted individuals who can support you when you’re weak.
- Take the ‘way out’ God provides when faced with temptation—like Joseph fleeing from Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39:7-20).
- Get back up! If you give in to temptation, it’s not the end—get back up! Don’t let shame keep you down; rise again and keep fighting.
Wielding the Word of God as a defense is a powerful strategy for those already steeped in the Christian faith. Know it, speak it, and let it guide you through your moments of weakness. “It is written, it is written, it is written.”
Listener Takeaways:
For Singles: Temptation can often feel more pronounced when you’re single, possibly leading to feelings of loneliness or seeking fulfillment in the wrong places. Remember the importance of self-awareness and accountability. Having a trusted friend or mentor to share your struggles can make a significant difference in your journey to overcome temptation.
For Married Couples: Overcoming temptation in a marriage is about transparency and teamwork. As a couple, practice open communication about your struggles and temptations. Work together to create a home environment that supports both partners in avoiding temptations and cultivating a relationship built on mutual trust and respect.
For Church Leaders: As a leader in a faith community, our role in helping others overcome temptation is pivotal. Encourage an atmosphere of openness and support, where members can confess their struggles without fear of judgment. Implement programs that offer practical steps and accountability partnerships to assist your congregation in their fight against temptation.
Remember, temptation is a shared struggle, but with these strategies and divine support, we can strive to live a life above sin and shame.
