Get Your Shift Together: Transitioning to Your Next Season with Michelle McKinney-Hammond

Michelle McKinney-Hammond is on the podcast today helping us who are feeling the stirring of a new season approaching in life and wondering how to navigate life transitions and the uncertainties and opportunities it brings.  I’m excited to share my conversation with best-selling author and international speaker Michelle McKinney-Hammond with you! Her influence has been monumental in my spiritual journey. Michelle’s teaching at a conference years ago led to my rededication to God, and it’s a story I often recount with profound gratitude.

Our discussion centered around her book, When Shift Happens, which brilliantly encapsulates life’s transitions through the lens of different seasons. Michelle explained how life, much like the seasons in nature, is full of cyclical changes. Embracing these seasons, understanding them, and responding appropriately is vital.

As someone who has recently transitioned from being a full-time pastor to stepping into the unknown at God’s command, I found Michelle’s insights on fear in transitions particularly helpful. She described so much of what I am currently feeling and facing. For example, fear can be a tool that heightens our dependence on God, keeping us tuned into His direction.

Michelle also discusses the concept of divine discontent, a stirring that signals the onset of change. This resonated with me, as I’ve felt this at various junctures of my life. We discussed the importance of recognizing this as a preparatory phase for transition, not a prompt for immediate action.

When Relationships Shift

We extended our conversation about life transitions to include relationships, especially marriage. Michelle emphasized the need to rediscover the joy and purpose in marriage, suggesting that couples engage in kingdom activities together. This perspective is crucial for maintaining a vibrant relationship.

Addressing singles, Michelle shared her journey to contentment in singleness. Her path to finding happiness in God alone before considering marriage was enlightening and reinforces the idea that wholeness in God is key, whether single or married.

Listener Takeaways:

  • For Singles: Embrace your current season of singleness as an opportunity for personal growth and finding contentment in God alone. It’s important to develop a sense of completeness in your relationship with God before entering into a romantic relationship.
  • For Married Couples: Rekindle the joy and purpose in your marriage by engaging in activities that align with God’s kingdom. Remember why you fell in love and work to maintain that connection. It’s crucial to keep the romance alive and prioritize your relationship amidst the busyness of life.
  • For Church Leaders: Encourage your congregation to embrace life’s transitions with faith and trust in God. Teach them to recognize and respond appropriately to the different seasons in their lives and to use periods of change as opportunities for growth and deeper reliance on God.

Remember, life’s transitions are inevitable, but how we respond to them shapes our journey. Michelle’s book and our conversation are testaments to embracing change with faith and courage.
