Jealous Much? The Antidotes to Jealousy
If we’re honest, we all deal with jealousy from time to time. Have you ever wondered how not to be consumed by jealousy when you see others enjoying what you desire? Welcome to another Faith Friday episode of Relationship Talk. In today’s episode, we’re diving back into the topic of jealousy and how to overcome it. Last week, we talked about handling jealousy from others, but today, it’s all about what to do when we find ourselves struggling with jealousy.
Scripture on Jealousy
Our focus Scripture is James 4:1-3 1 What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? 2 You want what you don’t have so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. 3 And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong – you want only what will give you pleasure.
This passage tells us that quarrels and fights among us often stem from our own evil desires and jealousy. We want what others have, and we may even scheme and strive to take it from them. But here’s the key: we don’t have it because we haven’t asked God, and when we do ask, our motives are often selfish. We seek only what brings us pleasure.
The Antidote to Jealousy
What do you do when you’re jealous of something or someone in your life? Maybe it’s someone else’s relationship, career, or blessings. The first antidote to jealousy is simple: ask God. But ask with the right motives. Reflect on why you desire what you’re asking for. If your motives are purely self-serving, it may not align with God’s plan for you.
For those of you who desire a spouse, consider why you want to get married. It may not be the right motive if it’s solely for companionship, financial security, or physical desires. God may withhold blessings when He knows they could be detrimental to us.
The second antidote to jealousy is gratitude. Instead of dwelling on what you lack, focus on what you have. Gratitude helps shift your perspective away from jealousy and towards contentment with the blessings you already possess.
Listener Takeaways
For Singles:
Reflect on your desire for a spouse and ensure your motives are aligned with God’s plan for marriage, not just personal desires
For Married Couples:
Recognize that jealousy can still affect married individuals. Check your motives and practice gratitude to maintain a healthy relationship.
For Church Leaders:
Teach your congregation about the root causes of jealousy and emphasize the importance of praying with the right motives and cultivating gratitude.
Remember, God has not forgotten about you, and He’s not favoring others over you. If He withholds a blessing or opportunity, it’s for your own good. Continue to pray with the right motives and maintain an attitude of gratitude. You can always reach Dana at Instagram @MrsDanaChe. Have a faith-filled weekend, and until the next episode, take care.
