How to Walk by Faith When Life Is Hard

The Christian life can be hard at times. During times of uncertainty, we must walk by faith. In this journey filled with unpredictable twists and turns that test the very essence of our faith, it’s easy to become despondent and get off course. It’s during these difficult times that the concept of walking in faith becomes not just a spiritual ideology, but a daily decision to maintain our trust in God in the face of adversity.

The Challenge of Walking by Faith During Difficult Times

Walking by faith during hard times is a sign of a mature Christian because it requires us to hold onto our beliefs and trust in the unseen when everything around us seems to be crumbling. It demands an unwavering commitment to hope and perseverance in the midst of despair and uncertainty. This is a challenge even for the strongest of Christians.

The book of Hebrews offers profound insights about faith and its significance in the face of trials. In Hebrews 11, often referred to as the “Hall of Faith,” we encounter a list of biblical examples, who, through unwavering faith, triumphed over incredible odds. Their stories of walking by faith serve as a testament to their tenacity in believing God even though many of them didn’t see the fulfillment of what they had hoped for in their lifetimes.

In Hebrews 12, believers are encouraged to persevere in their faith, likening it to running a race with endurance. This metaphor illuminates the idea that faith is not a mere fleeting emotion but a continuous, steadfast commitment to trust in God, regardless of the obstacles encountered.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge cloud of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

The Normalcy of Doubts and Wavering Faith

One of the striking aspects of Hebrews 11 is that it portrays the human side of faith. Even the great figures of faith, such as Abraham, faced moments of uncertainty and wavering belief. This serves as a comforting reminder that doubts and struggles are not uncommon in the journey of faith. It’s natural for believers to grapple with uncertainties, but it’s in persisting through these struggles that our faith is refined and strengthened.

In contemplating the challenges of maintaining faith in difficult times, we are drawn to the example of endurance and unwavering faith – Jesus Christ. His life exemplifies the resilience and steadfastness required to overcome trials and temptations. Despite facing unimaginable suffering, Jesus remained resolute in His trust in God’s plan.

Keeping Our Eyes Fixed on Jesus

In Hebrews 12:2, we are urged to “fix our eyes on Jesus.” By fixing our gaze on Jesus, we are able to block out the distractions and doubts that can hinder our faith, finding strength and assurance in his example.

Hebrews 11:1 captures the essence of faith, describing it as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” This statement emphasizes the foundational nature of faith – it provides substance and evidence for the very things we cannot perceive with our senses. It encourages us to trust in God’s plan, even when the outcomes are beyond our sight and understanding.

Embracing the Benefits of Living a Life of Faith

Embracing a life of faith, especially during challenging times, has several benefits. It provides a sense of joy, contentment, and peace, knowing that God is for us even in the midst of difficulties. Walking by faith allows us to anchor ourselves in hope and trust, regardless of the storms that may rage around us. Let us hold fast to the unwavering assurance that faith, though tested, emerges as a triumphant force, illuminating the path through life’s darkest valleys
