Sweet Repeat: If You Work It, It Will Work

On today’s episode, we’re talking about how to make your marriage work. The truth about relationships is if you work it, it will work. There’s so much that goes into a successful marriage. I recently heard someone say the way you spell love is E-F-F-O-R-T. We have to put in the effort to make our marriages work—ultimately strengthening the marriage bond.

This is a sweet repeat (re-run) of episode 79 but the message is as timely as ever. Effort and work in relationships cannot be overlooked. As I share personal stories and insights from my own marriage, I stress the importance of intentionality in cultivating a successful marriage. Just as achieving fitness goals demands intentionality and planning, so does nurturing a thriving relationship. It’s a journey that demands perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to constant growth.

5 Tips on How to Make Your Marriage Work

  1. You have to have a purpose for your marriage. If you don’t know the purpose of a thing, you will abuse it. What is the purpose of your marriage? Once you know your purpose, you’ll create a vision around that purpose. Again, this is intentionality on a whole other level.
  2. You need to learn yourself. What makes you happy? What makes you tick? Do you know yourself? If not, it will be difficult for you to know your spouse. Whitney Houston sang “The Greatest Love of All” is to love yourself. I believe it’s actually learning to love others. We inherently love ourselves (read what Jesus said in Mark 12:31), but many of us don’t know ourselves.
  3. You need to learn about your spouse. We aren’t the same people we were when we got married. Understanding your spouse is a key element in nurturing a strong and enduring relationship and making your marriage work. Continually learning about your spouse, understanding their love languages, and engaging in consistent and loving communication are important elements for a thriving marriage. If you think, “I know my spouse already,” you’ll setting yourself up for failure. Keep learning. Stay curious.
  4. Decide on marriage goals. #marriagegoals is a popular hashtag, but it has to be more than that if you want your marriage to succeed. What are some goals you can accomplish together as a couple? You can make your marriage work by setting marriage goals and establishing a shared vision for the future. Craft a narrative that aligns with your aspirations and create a meaningful template for your marriage. This shared vision becomes a guidepost, illuminating the path toward mutual growth, understanding, and fulfillment.
  5. Get feedback. When we want to improve, it’s crucial to elicit feedback from others better than we are. Ask your spouse. Ask a mentor couple. Again, keep learning and keep growing. It’s nearly impossible to improve upon anything without soliciting and submitting to others’ feedback.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly believe one of the purposes of marriage is to reflect God’s love for his church and is a tool for our spiritual growth and discipleship. This means our marital union is significant. Learning ways to make your marriage work is not something to take or treat lightly. You must work on your marriage if it’s going to thrive. If you work it, it will work.
