Sextimacy: From Awkward to Authentic Married Conversations about Sex

Married couples often find themselves in the midst of conversations with friends that touch upon intimate topics such as sex. Learn to have authentic not awkward conversations with the one you love. While sharing experiences and seeking advice from friends can be beneficial, it’s crucial to navigate these discussions with sensitivity and respect. In this episode  Dan and Emily Purcell of the Get Your Marriage On! Podcast join me and my hubby, Shaun, as we explore the importance of setting boundaries in conversations about sex, a “no-churchy” Christian perspective on discussing intimate matters with friends, and the significance of openness and authenticity between spouses.

Setting Boundaries as Friends

When it comes to discussing intimate matters with friends, it’s essential for married couples to establish clear boundaries. Respect for each other’s privacy and maintaining the sanctity of the marital relationship should be at the forefront of these discussions. Some key points to consider include:

Confidentiality: Emphasize the importance of maintaining confidentiality when sharing personal details about your marital life with friends. Trust is paramount, and both spouses should feel secure in knowing that their private conversations remain within the confines of the friendship.

Respect for Comfort Levels: Recognize that not all friends may be comfortable engaging in discussions about intimate matters. It’s crucial to be mindful of boundaries and not impose such conversations on friends who may prefer to refrain from such topics.

The Christian Perspective

From a Christian standpoint, the Bible encourages wisdom and discretion when it comes to sharing personal details, including matters related to intimacy. Proverbs 11:13 (NIV) advises, “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” This verse underscores the importance of discretion and trustworthiness in friendships.

Honoring Marriage: In the Christian faith, marriage is revered as a sacred covenant. Therefore, discussions about intimate matters should uphold the sanctity of the marital bond, respecting the privacy and exclusivity of the relationship between spouses. In the Christian faith, marriage is revered as a sacred covenant.

Openness Between Spouses

Open and honest communication between spouses is vital in navigating conversations about sex and their sex life. Prioritizing transparency within the marital relationship can foster trust and unity, allowing couples to approach these discussions with a shared understanding.

This ensures that both partners feel respected and valued in the decision-making process.

Strengthening Marital Bonds: Approaching conversations about sex with friends from a place of mutual understanding and openness can serve as an opportunity for couples to strengthen their marital bonds. By navigating these discussions together, couples can deepen their connection and reinforce their commitment to each other.

Respecting Diverse Perspectives

Recognize that friends may hold diverse perspectives on the topic of sex and intimacy. It’s important to approach these conversations with empathy and understanding, acknowledging that each individual’s experiences and beliefs may differ. Couples should be aware of the potential dangers of allowing outside perspectives to influence the dynamics of a marital relationship, and anchor their marriage in shared values and beliefs, rather than being swayed by societal norms or opinions.

The Sextimacy Challenge Invitation :

Dan shared insights into the genesis of the Intimately Us app, a tool designed to help couples intentionally build intimacy. Acknowledging the discomfort some couples feel when broaching these conversations, the app provides a platform for guided challenges, making it easier for couples to initiate discussions about their desires, needs, and preferences.

The Sextimacy Challenge— is an exciting opportunity for couples to focus on strengthening their relationships for 14 days. Couples can sync their apps, complete daily challenges, and earn points for a chance to win prizes, including a grand prize of airfare for two to anywhere in the country this Valentine’s, 2024.

In conclusion, navigating conversations about sex with friends requires intentional communication, respect for boundaries, and adherence to biblical principles. By doing this, married couples cultivate healthy and meaningful interactions with friends while upholding the sanctity of their union.
